Chivu doubts Lautaro, Thuram for Monza derby; Dimarco calls it special

At Perth’s Optus Stadium, Inter head coach Cristian Chivu faced a packed crowd of Italian expatriates while preparing for Wednesday’s derby, noting that even a 16‑hour flight cannot dim the rivalry’s intensity and that the Western Australian government’s “Walking on a Dream” tour backs the event.

The event is championed by vice‑premier Rita Saffioti, whose parents emigrated from Calabria in the post‑war era, and she highlighted the presence of 140,000 potential Italian fans in the region, insisting it must be a great celebration for everyone.

Chivu stressed that the derby remains significant for supporters but that August trophies “mean nothing”, emphasizing his priority is the players’ conditioning and minute management after a later start to their preparation.

Regarding the attacking line‑up, Chivu warned, “Difficilmente vedremo in campo Lautaro e Thuram,” explaining that it would be too risky to field them after only ten days of preparation and that they will be reassessed upon the team’s return from Australia.

He added that the 22 August fixture could be a major chance for youngsters such as Esposito, Bonny, Mosconi, Lavelli and Topalovic, noting the coach’s view that the intensity gap between the youth sector and Serie A must be understood for gradual development.

An Australian journalist pointed out local fans’ disappointment with Inter’s limited availability in Perth; Chivu replied that players will have further opportunities for autographs and photos, citing an upcoming public training before the Juventus friendly and recalling a similar situation in Hong Kong, while stressing the need for privacy amid a tight schedule.

When asked about the possibility of a Serie A match in Australia, Chivu suggested it would be attractive but logistically complex, proposing a season‑opening game in the country with a week‑long arrival to promote Italian football in this part of the world.

Federico Dimarco, speaking at the press conference, described the derby as “always a special feeling” for those raised in the youth system and for long‑time Inter members born elsewhere, and he outlined the season’s aim to repeat domestic success in Italy and improve in Europe after an early Champions League exit, referencing the UE competition.
