Chivu brands Inter the benchmark ahead of Juventus Derby in Perth
Cristian Chivu’s proclamation that Inter are the team to beat sets the tone for the Nerazzurri’s 2026‑27 Serie A title defence, signalling confidence ahead of a high‑profile Derby d’Italia friendly with Juventus in Perth and underlines the squad’s ambition to dominate the upcoming pre‑season schedule.
Chivu, head coach of FC Internazionale Milano, said the Nerazzurri are the team to beat as they head into the 2026‑27 Serie A campaign. He highlighted the Derby d’Italia friendly against Juventus scheduled for Saturday at 12.00 BST in Perth.
Inter will open their title defence against Monza on August 22, but first they must complete two pre‑season friendlies. The most high‑profile of these is the Juventus derby in Perth on Saturday, kicking off at 12.00 BST (21.00 local time).
Speaking to club media, Chivu assessed the pre‑season progress, noting the squad’s togetherness and the very few physical issues reported so far. He said the limited injury list is encouraging as the team builds fitness.
He acknowledged that the squad is still missing a few pieces but has several weeks to reach optimal shape for the opening league match. The coach stressed that the low number of physical problems is the most encouraging aspect at the moment.
When asked which clubs could challenge Inter for the Serie A crown, Chivu replied that he has not worked that out yet, citing the usual teams that want to make life difficult for the reigning champions. He reiterated that Inter are the team to beat.
Chivu also addressed the summer transfer window, expressing a desire to see a few new players arrive before it closes while urging calm. He noted the right wing‑back vacancy left by Denzel Dumfries has no set deadline and that the sporting directors will handle the recruitment.
Looking ahead to the Juventus clash, Chivu emphasized the need for minutes for the whole squad and said he does not have a fixed starting XI. He explained that rotation will depend on the situation, the opposition, the number of games in a short space of time and the players’ fitness.
With the Perth friendly looming, the focus now shifts to finalising the squad and preparing for the season‑opening encounter with Monza on August 22, which will mark the start of Inter’s defence of the Serie A title. The coach believes the Derby will serve as a crucial test of fitness and tactical principles ahead of the league opener.
