Cheltenham sign England C keeper Stanway as Barrow rebuilds

Cheltenham Town have secured 25‑year‑old England C goalkeeper Wyll Stanway from the Cumbrian side Barrow for an undisclosed fee, adding a former semi‑professional international and the brother of England Lionesses midfielder Georgia Stanway to their squad, as they look to bolster their goalkeeping options for the upcoming campaign.

Steve Cotterill praised the signing, saying Wyll brings another dimension to the goalkeeping department and possesses excellent qualities at a great age where an upward trajectory is expected. The manager believes the 25‑year‑old can compete for the starting spot and add depth to the defensive line.

Stanway spent two seasons with Barrow, making 65 appearances across all competitions and earning caps for the England C team, showcasing his abilities at the semi‑professional level. Prior to Barrow he featured at non‑league level for Chester, where he gained his first senior minutes and laid the foundation for his professional career.

Barrow, the Cumbrian club, are rebuilding after their relegation to the National League, prompting a squad overhaul. The move was highlighted in a Getty Images photo series documenting the club’s restructuring.

The addition gives Cheltenham Town a younger goalkeeper with upward potential, strengthening their defensive options as the season progresses. It also provides competition for existing keepers, potentially raising overall performance.

For Stanway, the transfer offers a fresh challenge following Barrow’s drop, allowing him to continue developing in a new environment. Both parties aim to benefit from the move as the campaign unfolds.
