Chelsea turn to England veteran Welbeck to fill striking void

Chelsea have signed England striker Danny Welbeck on a two‑year contract, a move aimed at plugging a striking void after recent goal‑scoring concerns, with the deal announced on 1 August 2026 at 17:16 BST and officially Updated at 17:39 BST.

Chelsea’s pursuit was driven by his proven scoring record and England pedigree, addressing a clear need for a reliable Premier League striker following a period of limited firepower up front.

The club secured Welbeck on a two‑year deal for undisclosed terms, ending his six‑year spell at Brighton where he amassed 51 goals across all competitions.

Brighton posted on X: “Thank you for everything, Danny.” confirming the player’s departure and the club’s gratitude.

Welbeck’s 13 Premier League goals last season highlighted his continued quality and provided a tangible benchmark for Chelsea’s attacking ambitions.

Speaking after the agreement, Welbeck said he felt “honoured to come to a club of this stature” after “fantastic conversations with the manager” and added he “has that fire in my belly”.

Manager Pochettino Alonso is currently in Sydney with his squad before moving to Hong Kong on the pre‑season tour, where Welbeck will join his new teammates.

Chelsea has also secured Maxence Lacroix for £52 million and Morgan Rogers for £117 million, while still eyeing further adjustments in the striker line‑up.

Welbeck’s arrival may prompt a reshuffle involving Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu and Joao Pedro, with at least two expected to leave on loan or sale; Joao Pedro is deemed untouchable and set to sign a new long‑term contract.

His six‑year tenure at Brighton concluded after 51 goals, following a 2019‑20 spell at Watford; prior to that, Welbeck graduated from Manchester United’s academy, scoring 29 goals in 142 appearances, and later spent five seasons at Arsenal with 32 goals.

The undisclosed terms give Chelsea a seasoned England striker for the upcoming campaign, while the club looks ahead to the Asian tour, where Welbeck will aim to translate his Premier League form into new success amid competition for places.
