Chelsea target Como midfielder Lucas Da Cunha as Alonso eyes midfield boost

Journalist Graeme Bailey Chelsea are preparing a move for Como midfielder Lucas Da Cunha, the 25‑year‑old French talent who could join the Blues under manager Xabi Alonso.

Why the Blues are interested

Da Cunha has featured in six Serie A games this season, showing solid tackling, tidy passing and the ability to operate as a box‑to‑box, defensive or number‑ten midfielder. Although he has yet to register a goal or assist, his performances have placed him among the most gifted central midfielders in the Italian league.

Competition for his signature

Chelsea will not be alone; Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion are also linked to the French midfielder. Da Cunha’s contract runs until the summer of 2031, meaning a January or summer 2027 acquisition could come at a premium.

Alonso believes Da Cunha would add quality and depth to his midfield, offering a player capable of competing for a regular first‑team spot at Stamford Bridge. The manager notes that the midfielder’s peak years lie ahead, making him a worthwhile target for 2027.

While Da Cunha excels defensively, he still needs to improve his goal and assist output to thrive in the Premier League. The transition to English football remains uncertain, but his versatility could suit various midfield roles at Chelsea.

Should the transfer materialise, the Frenchman would join a Chelsea side looking to reinforce its central areas, while Como would lose one of its most promising young players ahead of a long‑term contract.
