Chelsea's Pedro faces three‑week layoff ahead of Brentford clash
Chelsea's 24‑year‑old forward Joao Pedro suffered a knee sprain in the 2‑2 draw with Hull City last Saturday, leaving him a major doubt for the club's Premier League visit to Brentford on Friday, reports in Brazil confirm and may miss the match.
Pedro's impact under Alonso
Since Xabi Alonso took charge, the 24‑year‑old has become a key attacking outlet. He has contributed three goals and an assist in four Premier League appearances. His performances earned him the division’s Player of the Month award for August.
Pedro was absent from Chelsea’s open training session earlier this week, the session that precedes the Brentford clash on Friday night. His omission raised further doubts about his fitness ahead of the match.
Injury details and expected lay‑off
Brasil reported that Pedro sustained a knee sprain during Chelsea’s 2‑2 draw with Hull City last Saturday. A Getty image captured Pedro celebrating the equaliser in that match. He visited a London clinic on Tuesday, where doctors advised a minimum three‑week rest period. The scan results have been sent to the Brazilian Football Confederation.
On Wednesday, Pedro pulled out of Brazil’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Australia and India. Fluminense’s Matheus Martinelli was called up as his replacement. The decision follows the medical advice received after his knee injury.
At Thursday’s press conference, Xabi Alonso said Pedro’s participation against Brentford was only a “possibility”. “In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad, we are having the last training session tomorrow so no one is ruled out for us for Friday, so I prefer to be cautious and we will wait until tomorrow to take the final decision on every player,” he explained.
After the Brentford encounter on Friday, Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture is a home game against Bournemouth on 10 October. The club will have to manage without Pedro if the recommended three‑week rest is enforced.
Pedro’s absence removes one of Chelsea’s most prolific contributors this season, potentially limiting the team’s attacking options in the crucial early stages of the campaign.
