Chelsea's midfield woes linger despite £349 million spending
Chelsea suffered a 2‑1 loss to champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, with former right‑back Reece James operating in midfield for manager Xabi Alonso. The defeat raised fresh questions about the Blues’ midfield depth after a £349 million summer spend.
First‑half set‑up and early drama
James, who began his career as a right‑back, was tasked with tracking captain Martin Odegaard but failed to close down the Norwegian as he netted Arsenal’s winner. Xabi Alonso has praised James, saying he can become one of the world’s best midfielders, and James had already spent almost half of the previous season in a midfield role. The match opened with Chelsea pressing, yet Arsenal’s organised defence limited their chances.
Second‑half shift and decisive moments
In the second half, Malo Gusto replaced Romeo Lavia, highlighting concerns over Chelsea’s midfield depth. Lax marking allowed Odegaard’s decisive strike, while a lack of creativity from the bench left the Blues exposed as Arsenal’s substitutes, including Mikel Arteta’s bench, helped seal the victory. Possession fell to 25.6 percent in the earlier 4‑3 win over Brighton, the lowest figure recorded since the 2003‑04 season, underscoring the midfield’s struggles.
The final whistle confirmed Arsenal’s triumph, leaving Chelsea to contemplate a season without European football and a midfield built around converted right‑backs.
Post‑match, Xabi Alonso reiterated his belief in James’s potential but admitted the injury to Moises Caicedo – who limped off after eleven minutes against Brighton – forces him into “almost uncharted territory”. Ashley Young added that “Chelsea don’t have European football this season, so they can concentrate on the Premier League, but the worry is you’re finishing a game against the champions with two right‑backs in midfield”.
Financially, Chelsea have spent £349 million this summer yet missed out on several targets: Monaco halted a £47 million move for Lamine Camara, bids of up to £64 million for Alex Scott were rejected, and a deal for Manu Kone was blocked by Roma’s Gian Piero Gasperini. The club also sold Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a joint British‑record £125 million without securing a direct replacement.
Despite the setbacks, club‑record signing Morgan Rogers scored in the second minute, becoming the first Chelsea player since Eden Hazard in 2018‑19 to score or assist in each of the opening three Premier League matches of a season. The Blues have conceded seven goals in three games, prompting Alonso to stress the need for tighter defending.
