Chelsea’s experience push lands Danny Welbeck as Ashley Young watches
Former Manchester United winger Ashley Young says he is ‘gutted’ that striker Danny Welbeck opted for Chelsea over Manchester United this summer, after the Blues paid roughly £5 million to secure the 36‑year‑old on a two‑year contract in the Premier League as part of their squad rebuild.
Chelsea have moved away from a purely youth‑led transfer policy, adding seasoned players ahead of Xabi Alonso’s debut season in the Premier League. The club’s hierarchy believes experience will balance a youthful squad that has struggled for consistency.
Welbeck’s deal and terms
After beating Arsenal to a £117 million deal for Morgan Rogers, the Blues turned their attention to Welbeck, a surprise given he will turn 36 in November. Welbeck left Brighton for Chelsea for a fee around £5 million and signed a two‑year contract. Jordan Henderson terminated his Brentford deal two days later to follow him to Stamford Bridge.
Pre‑season preview and upcoming fixtures
Welbeck made his unofficial Chelsea debut in a 45‑minute run‑out against Juventus, giving fans a first glimpse of his impact. Ashley Young, who played alongside Welbeck for four years at Manchester United, praised the signing, saying “Chelsea have made some good signings and they need some experience in that squad.” Young told talkSPORT that Welbeck is “a really good friend of mine” and that he “should have been in England’s World Cup squad,” expressing disappointment he did not return to United. Former United teammate Gary Neville criticised United for allowing Welbeck to leave for Arsenal in 2014, calling the move a mistake, but added that Welbeck will give Alonso “a real option up front” and described him as “fantastic” and “a good move for Chelsea.” Chelsea’s next pre‑season test is against Real Sociedad, followed by their Premier League opener away to Fulham on August 24.
