Chelsea's £47.1m bid sparks Liverpool's hunt for Trent Alexander-Arnold

Chelsea's £47.1m bid sparks Liverpool's hunt for Trent Alexander-Arnold

£47.1 million was the price tag that collapsed on Lamine Camara’s deadline‑day move to Chelsea, a deal that now fuels speculation that Liverpool, under Andoni Iraola, could swoop for the Senegalese midfielder while also eyeing a Premier League return for Trent Alexander‑Arnold.

Domestic focus after European win

A 4‑3 midweek victory over Villarreal gave the Reds a boost, but the Champions League tie is now a fortnight away, shifting attention back to the Premier League. Liverpool will host Brighton on Sunday, hoping to unsettle one of the division’s in‑form sides. The win signalled progress, yet Andoni Iraola admits the job is only just beginning.

Transfer market buzz around Alexander‑Arnold and Camara

Premier League icon Kyle Walker backed Alexander‑Arnold’s return to English football but doubted a homecoming at Liverpool after his departure. "Why not? Can he go back to Liverpool with the way that he left? I'm not too sure. Do I see him at another club? He's got to go to one of the big ones. Manchester United [or] Man City [for example]." Walker told when asked about the right‑back’s future.

Tom Sunderland of Sport reported that Walker’s comments came as the 28‑year‑old continues to fight for minutes at Real Madrid under José Mourinho. Alexander‑Arnold has yet to become the revelation many expected, still battling for a place against summer signing Denzel Dumfries.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s £47.1 million bid for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara fell apart at the last minute, even after the Senegal international completed a medical. The collapse leaves the Blues inches from securing the player and opens a window for Liverpool.

Fabrizio Romano later reported that Iraola’s side are "tracking" Camara, setting up a potential showdown with Xabi Alonso should Chelsea revive interest. Both clubs remain linked to the midfielder, and Liverpool could benefit if the deal is resurrected.

Camara himself said last month, "There was a possibility I could leave. It didn't go through at the last minute and that's part of football. I've turned the page and am focusing on the season." Iraola appears keen to allocate resources to rebuild his midfield in 2027, keeping Camara on Liverpool’s radar.

City’s current Premier League spending breaches make a move for Alexander‑Arnold appear impossible, yet Manchester United could still use his talents on the right side of defence. As January approaches, background negotiations continue, with rumours swirling around both the Reds and their rivals.
