Chelsea's £117m Rogers signing forces loan talks for Garnacho

Chelsea's £117m Rogers signing forces loan talks for Garnacho

Chelsea have broken the British transfer record by paying £117m to bring Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive British footballer in history, and within hours the club began negotiations to loan Alejandro Garnacho to the Villains as they prepare for the August arrival of Dastan Satpaev from FC Kairat.

With Rogers added, Chelsea now have 38 senior players on their books, prompting the club to consider further sales to manage the roster.

Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Guiu have been identified as transfer‑listed, according to club sources. These players occupy defensive and midfield roles, offering potential exits.

Mamadou Sarr is expected to leave on loan to another Premier League side, adding to the list of departures. His departure would free up further space in the squad.

A small group of players are considered untouchable, including Moises Caicedo, Estevao Willian, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Levi Colwill, as well as highly rated prospect Josh Acheampong. These individuals are expected to remain central to Chelsea's plans.

Chelsea have also failed to qualify for European competition this season, limiting the number of matches available for player rotation. Analysis of clubs that succeeded without Europe shows only 13 or 14 players typically exceed 1,500 minutes across all competitions.

FIFA has moved to outlaw so‑called “bomb squads” this summer, increasing pressure on clubs to trim squads. The £117m outlay combined with the new regulations underscores broader market pressure on top clubs to generate sales and balance their books.
