Chelsea pivot to free‑agent Wijnaldum after Camara deal collapses
Chelsea have moved to sign former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer after their bid for Lamine Camara from AS Monaco collapsed on deadline day. The Blues sold Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a reported fee of between £125 million and £145 million and had agreed a €55 million (£47.1m) Camara deal before it fell through.
Deadline‑day drama and the Camara collapse
Chelsea entered the summer window hoping to replace Enzo Fernandez with a younger midfielder and were prepared to sell the Argentine if a suitable replacement arrived. They reached an agreement with AS Monaco for Lamine Camara, a deal reported at €55 million (£47.1m). However, the deal collapsed after Folarin Balogun’s proposed move to Everton hit a medical snag, prompting Monaco to pull the plug at the eleventh hour.
Sources said Camara’s camp were “furious” with Monaco’s decision, while Chelsea were left De, disappointed by the Camara collapse. The Blues also expressed extreme unhappiness with how the situation unfolded, according to the same sources. The reversal left the club without a direct replacement for Fernandez as the transfer window shut.
Wijnaldum emerges as Chelsea’s fallback option
With the Camara option gone, Chelsea turned their attention to 35‑year‑old Georginio Wijnaldum, who is a free agent after his contract with Al‑Ettifaq expired. Wijnaldum recorded 17 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances for Al‑Ettifaq last season. As a free agent, he can be signed outside the English transfer window.
According to reports, journalist Santi Aouna said Chelsea have contacted Wijnaldum in the past few hours. Fabrizio Romano later reported that the club will not sign the Dutch midfielder and is playing down all reports.
The Blues value Wijnaldum’s experience, noting his Premier League title win with Liverpool and his role in their Champions League triumphs. He would join former Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, who also arrived at Chelsea as a free agent in August. Chelsea have already added other seasoned players such as Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson this summer, showing a trend towards veteran signings.
If the deal goes through, Chelsea would bolster their midfield depth ahead of the new season. For Wijnaldum, a return to the Premier League could revive his chances of rejoining the Dutch national team. The move would also illustrate Chelsea’s willingness to pursue free‑agent solutions after a costly summer.
