Chelsea intensify chase for Dutch midfielder Gjivai Zechiel

Chelsea have confirmed they are actively tracking Dutch midfielder Gjivai Zechiel of Feyenoord after his scintillating start to the Eredivisie season, with the Blues hoping to add the 22‑year‑old to their midfield ahead of the 2027 window, as reported by TEAMtalk, following a run of nine goal contributions in seven league games.

Midfield overhaul after Fernandez exit

Chelsea are actively assessing midfield options for 2027 after losing Enzo Fernandez on deadline day and failing to secure a replacement before the window closed. The Blues made a late move for Lamine Camara but could not finalise the deal, and an earlier approach for Alex Scott also fell through. Adam Wharton remains among the names being evaluated.

Zechiel's rise and European interest

Gjivai Zechiel, 22, has become one of the Eredivisie's most exciting midfielders, registering five goals and four assists in his opening seven league games – nine goal contributions in total. His earlier loan spell at Utrecht produced ten goals and ten assists, convincing Feyenoord to give him a starring role at De Kuip under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Dutchman’s all‑round profile – capable of deep‑lying duties or advancing as a playmaker and a keen instinct for arriving in the box – has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs. Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest are reported to be monitoring him, while Liverpool scouts have also checked his progress.

Chelsea’s recruitment department, as reported by TEAMtalk, view Zechiel’s versatility as a perfect fit for the Blues’ midfield rebuild, especially after the loss of Fernandez. The club’s interest is described as “intensifying” as they keep a close eye on the Dutch midfielder alongside Wharton and other options.

Zechiel’s recent call‑up to Xavi’s Netherlands senior squad underscores his rapid development and adds further weight to the interest he is generating across Europe. Feyenoord, however, are keen to retain the emerging star after entrusting him with a prominent role following his Utrecht success.

Should Chelsea succeed in signing Zechiel, they would add a proven goal‑contributing midfielder to a squad that has struggled to replace Fernandez, while the player would move to a club eager to give him a platform in the Premier League. For Feyenoord, losing the Dutch talent would be a blow to their midfield ambitions this season.
