Chelsea hire Martinez after Sanchez’s shaky start, citing World Cup
Chelsea turned to Emiliano Martinez after Robert Sanchez’s unconvincing performance in the Premier League opener, leaving the club desperate for a proven shot‑stopper. The 34‑year‑old arrived from Aston Villa at the end of the summer window for a £7.5 million fee, citing Argentina’s World Cup final loss as a personal catalyst.

Martinez completed his move to Chelsea towards the close of the summer transfer window for a fee of £7.5 million. The 34‑year‑old had helped Argentina reach two World Cup finals and had lifted the Europa League while playing at Villa Park with Aston Villa.
Alonso’s switch follows Sanchez’s shaky start
Manager Xabi Alonso dismissed Robert Sanchez after the goalkeeper’s unconvincing showing in the Premier League opener and immediately installed Martinez as Chelsea’s No 1. Sanchez was subsequently sent on loan to Cesc Fabregas’ Como side in Italy.
Martinez said he arrived at Stamford Bridge determined to win trophies and described Chelsea as a “good match” for his ambitions. In the interview the Argentine was also referred to as Emi. “I feel useful, fast, and good,” he added, insisting the move was the best decision for his career.
Speaking to Argentine outlet TYC Sports during the international break, Martinez explained how Argentina’s World Cup final defeat shaped his move.
“It took me a while to think; losing the World Cup final hurt a lot. I tried changing clubs to mentally refresh myself, and I succeeded. I came here [to Chelsea], and it was the best thing I did because I feel useful, fast, and good.”
Chelsea continue to struggle defensively, conceding more goals than any other Premier League side this season. Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel praised Martinez, saying, “He’s only costing them £7.5 million, top, top, world‑class goalkeeper. He could turn out to be the signing of the season.”
Chelsea’s first game in three weeks is against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, where Martinez is expected to start. He will also likely feature in Argentina’s farewell friendly for Lionel Messi against Benin on Wednesday morning.
