Chelsea flop: former BVB youngster Jamie Gittens misses a glittering season start

The season start of former Borussia player Jamie Gittens at the Blues is a fiasco: after a summer transfer for around 60 million euros, the 22‑year‑old winger has not yet made a single Premier League appearance.

Playing Time and Performance

Gittens has so far only taken the field twice in the League Cup – ten minutes against Luton Town and 45 minutes in the 6‑3 victory over Aston Villa. Despite the team's many goals, he was unable to record any goal involvement.

In the current season he has played 27 league matches, accumulated 1,102 minutes, scored one goal and provided five assists. These figures are hardly enough to justify the high purchase price.

Background and Outlook

The winger injured his thigh in early February and was out until the end of the season, which may have contributed to the weak start. Shortly before the transfer window a loan deal with Sky Italia was discussed, but no agreement was reached.

Internally Gittens now has to compete with the growing competition from Morgan Rogers, while Chelsea's 3‑4‑2‑1 system does not suit his profile as a pure attacking wide player.

Gittens moved last summer from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea for around 60 million euros. Previously Bayern Munich is also said to have shown interest. At Dortmund he played 107 games, scored 17 goals and provided 14 assists – solid, but not convincing for such a high price.

In summary, it can be said that Dortmund made a good deal with the sale, while Chelsea and Gittens themselves have been greatly disappointed. The young Englishman now has to prove in training that he deserves the coaches' trust in order to earn a role in the first team in the future.
