Chelsea eye Man City defender Khusanov as January fix

New manager Xabi Alonso is reported to be weighing a January transfer for Manchester City centre‑back Abdukodir Khusanov, with Chelsea keen to bolster a defence that has let in twelve goals in five Premier League games.

Defensive frailties prompt pursuit

The Blues began the season with two wins against Fulham and Brighton, but have since slipped, losing to Arsenal and Brentford and drawing with newly‑promoted Hull City, leaving them mid‑table. Conceding twelve goals – the most of any club – has intensified the need for reinforcement.

Despite signing Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in the summer, Chelsea still lack depth at centre‑back. Reports suggest the club is ‘keeping a close eye on’ Khusanov as they seek a winter solution, especially after a disappointing start reminiscent of Tottenham’s early‑season woes.

Khusanov’s profile and interest

Khusanov, the Uzbekistan international, joined Manchester City from Lens in January 2025 for an initial €40m and recently signed a new five‑year contract, expressing gratitude to City fans and ambition to impress sporting director Hugo Viana.

Viana praised Khusanov’s physical attributes, insisting he will become one of the world’s best centre‑backs within five or six years. The report adds that three other Premier League clubs are also monitoring the defender, highlighting the competition for his signature.

For Chelsea, securing Khusanov would address a glaring defensive gap while aligning with Alonso’s long‑term project. For the Uzbek centre‑back, a move to Stamford Bridge could provide regular Premier League action and further his development under a former world‑class midfielder turned manager.
