Chelsea eye Brentford captain Henderson in surprise free‑transfer hunt

Chelsea are reportedly preparing to add former Liverpool and Ajax captain Jordan Henderson, 36, to their squad on a free transfer, aiming to inject seasoned experience after a season focused on youthful signings. Henderson has spent just one season at Brentford and holds a contract for a second year, yet the Bees are prepared to let him move on to a top‑flight club. The midfielder’s departure would open a spot in Brentford’s midfield.

Chelsea’s interest was highlighted by The Athletic, which noted the London side can acquire the player on a free transfer from their city rival. The deal would involve no transfer fee.

The Blues seek an experience impulse, and Henderson, a former Liverpool and Ajax captain, fits that profile. He could become the third summer addition for manager Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea have also been linked with 35‑year‑old Danny Welbeck, indicating a broader push for seasoned forwards. The club’s recent strategy has shifted from solely signing young prospects to adding proven experience this summer.

Earlier, Granit Xhaka was reportedly on Chelsea’s radar, but Sunderland secured his transfer. English media also suggest free‑transfer target John Stones is attracting the Blues’ attention.

Henderson’s World Cup involvement was limited to a single appearance due to an arm injury. He featured only once at the tournament.

He could become the third summer addition for Alonso, joining recent arrivals Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta. Rogers and Palestra arrived earlier this summer.
