Chelsea chase midfield spark and defensive depth in January

Chelsea chase midfield spark and defensive depth in January

The Blues have a clear vacancy in midfield after Enzo Fernandez departed for Manchester City in a £125 million deal, leaving Xabi Alonso eager to replace the play‑maker before the January window closes. The club also aims to bolster the back line, eyeing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni alongside the midfield target.

Summer overhaul leaves a midfield void

The Blues brought in twelve new faces over the summer, with Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos and Enzo Fernandez among the principal departures. Xabi Alonso was seen clapping supporters after a Premier League match, a gesture that underscored his commitment to the club’s vision. Despite the influx, Chelsea still feel the midfield void left by Fernandez’s £125 million move to Manchester City. The west London outfit therefore entered the January market seeking a player who can change games without dominating possession.

January targets and the price tags attached

Reports indicate Chelsea are targeting Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez for a January arrival. Alonso has called Lopez “a priority”, insisting he wants a midfielder capable of turning games around without needing to dominate possession. Spanish media claim the club is prepared to offer €140 million (£120 million) to test how far Barça will resist. Joan Laporta has warned that Lopez would not leave for a “reasonable fee”, noting that offers a year ago were around €40 million and now exceed €130 million.

On the defensive side, Chelsea have set their sights on Inter Milan centre‑back Alessandro Bastoni. Inter are said to value Bastoni at €80 million (£68 million), a price Chelsea appear ready to meet. Barcelona have also expressed interest in Bastoni but lack the financial capacity to meet the €80 million demand. The report adds that Chelsea can afford a high salary and any additional clauses required by the Giuseppe Meazza stadium.

The club also monitored Roma’s Manu Kone and Monaco’s Lamine Camara on deadline day. Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that Camara was already preparing for a medical in a private London hospital before the deal stalled. So Chelsea are furious with Monaco, fearing the episode could strain relations between the two clubs for years.

Negotiations, rival interest and looming hurdles

The January market will test Chelsea’s ability to negotiate with both Barcelona and Inter Milan while preserving the club’s rapport with Monaco. The Blues hierarchy had already given the go‑ahead for Fernandez’s £125 million move to Manchester City, demonstrating their willingness to spend. If the €140 million offer for Lopez is rejected, the Blues may have to revisit alternative midfield options. Likewise, securing Bastoni will depend on Inter’s willingness to accept Chelsea’s proposed terms.

Joan Laporta and Deco have dismissed the possibility of meeting Inter’s €80 million demand, instead eyeing alternatives such as Ruud Nijstad or Nico Schlotterbeck, the latter being Hans‑Dieter Flick’s preferred choice. Nevertheless, Chelsea’s financial muscle means money is no problem at Stamford Bridge, allowing them to offer an “incredibly high salary”. The club therefore remains poised to outbid rivals if negotiations progress favourably.
