Chelsea and Dortmund battle for American striker as price climbs

Chelsea have entered the race for 17‑year‑old American centre‑forward Malik Jakupovic, joining Borussia Dortmund in pursuit of the Philadelphia Union prodigy as both clubs prepare to meet the MLS side’s demanding price tag. TEAMtalk the Stamford Bridge side have taken a keen interest in the 6ft 3in striker, who has already impressed at senior level.

Growing European interest

Jakupovic has become one of the most talked‑about talents in MLS, prompting a growing list of European clubs to monitor his progress. In addition to Chelsea and Dortmund, RB Salzburg, VfB Stuttgart and AS Monaco have sent scouts, while Eintracht Frankfurt showed interest previously.

Dortmund remain the longest‑standing suitor, having submitted bids of €3 million during the summer window – offers that Philadelphia rejected. Despite the setback, German scouts were spotted at a training camp in Marbella and club contacts continue, underscoring Dortmund’s determination.

Philadelphia’s stance and the price question

Jakupovic signed a long‑term homegrown contract earlier this year that runs until 2030 with an option for an additional season, giving the Union significant leverage. The MLS club has indicated it would only consider a sale for a fee in the double‑digit millions, well above Dortmund’s proposals.

His record supports the valuation: he has netted 12 goals in nine appearances for the United States under‑17 side and has already scored his first professional goal after several substitute outings in MLS, also featuring in continental competition.

With Chelsea now in the mix, the competition highlights the regard in which Jakupovic is held across Europe. Both English and German sides will continue to assess the striker as they weigh the financial demands against his potential impact.
