Charlton’s loan gamble: Nigeria keeper Okonkwo adds height
Arthur Okonkwo, the 6ft 6in Nigeria international goalkeeper, has joined English Championship side Charlton Athletic on a season‑long loan from Wrexham, the club announced in a statement on Thursday. The move makes him the Addicks’ eighth signing of the summer and adds depth to their goalkeeping options.
Addicks’ eighth signing
Charlton Athletic, competing in the English Championship, moved quickly to secure Okonkwo after a busy transfer window. The club already confirmed the arrivals of Ivan Mesík, Billy Koumetio, Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara, Millenic Alli, Nathaniel Chalobah and Timothy Ouma.
The club announced: “The 6ft 6in goalkeeper becomes the Addicks’ eighth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Ivan Mesík, Billy Koumetio, Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara, Millenic Alli, Nathaniel Chalobah and Timothy Ouma.” The statement highlighted the depth added to the squad ahead of the new campaign.
The 6ft 6in Nigeria goalkeeper adds significant height to the Addicks’ roster. He also brings international experience, having earned two caps for Nigeria and featuring in the Unity Cup triumph at The Valley this summer.
After sealing his switch, Okonkwo said: “I’m happy to be here and I’m ready to go. Coming here, it’s another season where I really want to do well and improve again. Speaking to the manager, that’s what he wants me to do here – not only to do well, but to improve as a goalkeeper. It’s a great group. They’ve welcomed me really well and I can’t wait to get to know them even more.”
Okonkwo was born in Camden and began his professional career with Arsenal, signing his first senior contract in the summer of 2021. Subsequent loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, where he lifted the Austrian Cup, preceded his permanent move to Wrexham in June 2024.
At Wrexham, the Red Dragons achieved back‑to‑back promotions, finishing second in 2024/25 and narrowly missing the Championship play‑offs the following term. His contributions helped the club secure a place in League One before the loan.
The announcement also noted a recent deal involving Saudi Club Al Wehda, underscoring the active transfer market across leagues.
