Charlie Holt becomes first Manchester City player to depart after guilty verdict
Seventeen‑year‑old midfielder Charlie Holt has left Manchester City to join Cardiff City’s Under‑21 side, becoming the first player to exit the club after the Premier League found the Citizens guilty on all 115 financial‑rule charges. Holt made 12 league appearances for City’s U18s as they secured the Premier League North title.
Move to the Welsh capital
The young Welsh‑born midfielder will not feature for Cardiff’s senior squad immediately; he will play for the Under‑21s under manager Matthew Bloxham. Holt said he was “very pleased to be here” and described Cardiff as a “brilliant environment” where he hopes to add a few goals.
City boss Enzo Maresca has already overseen the departure of David Eze to Manchester United, a transfer that took place before the charges were officially announced.
Background to the verdict
The independent commission’s September decision accused Manchester City of disguising more than £900 million in sham commercial deals between 2009 and 2018. The club has appealed the seismic guilty verdict and awaits a final sanction, which could range from a massive points deduction to possible relegation.
analyst Ben Jacobs warned that the Premier League may seek a record‑breaking points cut, potentially amounting to 50‑55 points – a de facto relegation – and that the EFL stands ready to back any decision to keep City out of the English Football League.
Holt signed his scholarship with Manchester City in June 2025 and never made a senior debut, despite his contributions to the U18 side’s success. His departure comes amid uncertainty over the club’s future at the Etihad.
Manchester City are set to travel to Anfield on Sunday for their first match since the guilty verdict was announced, while Cardiff prepare to integrate Holt into their Welsh‑capital development set‑up.
