Chaos in Spain: storm cancels games in Catalonia and Valencia
While the storm that swept Catalonia caused the cancellation of several games scheduled for this Saturday, the match between the Spanish national team and the Czech Republic, set for Oviedo, remains at no risk of being postponed. The contrast highlights how the bad weather only affects certain regional competitions, but not the international calendar.
Regional match suspensions
A weather warning, which includes the presence of a mini‑tornado, was issued for the area, forcing the suspension of a series of events in Spain, specifically in Catalonia and parts of the Valencian Community. Catalan authorities banned all activities after 7 p.m., imposing restrictions until 2 p.m. tomorrow in twenty counties of the coastal and pre‑coastal area, including Baix Camp, Alt Empordà, Moianès and Osona.
The meeting between Sabadell and FC Andorra, a La Liga 2 fixture that would have been contested at Nova Creu Alta, was suspended and will be rescheduled. Likewise, the clash between Sant Andreu and Antequera, from the Primera RFEF, was postponed.
The restrictions also cover the Valencian Community, reinforcing the extent of the chaos spreading across Spain. Despite the severity, the game between Spain and the Czech Republic, taking place in Oviedo, Asturias, is not at risk, as it is not scheduled for Catalonia.
If the international match had been programmed in Catalonia, it would have been necessarily cancelled, as demonstrated by the strong response of the local authorities. The scenario highlights the difference between the regional impact of the bad weather and the protection of the national team’s calendar.
