Chaos in Germany: Kaiserslautern’s cup tie erupts into violence

Kaiserslautern secured progression to the next round of the German Cup after a turbulent 32nd‑round tie against Waldhof Mannheim on 21 August 2026 was halted and later resumed, with a decisive goal in the 120th minute ending a 0‑0 deadlock.

The encounter was classified as a high‑risk rencontre by authorities because of the historic rivalry between the supporters of the two clubs. Waldhof Mannheim compete in the third tier (D3) while Kaiserslautern play in the second tier (D2).

The game was stopped a half‑hour before the end of regular time while the score remained 0‑0 in the 32nd‑round of the German Cup. Officials halted play after chaos broke out on the pitch.

Police reported that Kaiserslautern supporters launched rockets toward the main stand. Mannheim supporters then invaded the playing surface, prompting a massive police response.

A large police operation forced the intruders back toward the local Kop area using physical force. After the intervention, the match was allowed to continue.

Kaiserslautern eventually qualified after scoring in the 120th minute of extra time. The goal secured their progression in the competition.

The police said 33 federal officers and two state police were lightly injured. In total, 85 people required medical treatment, with eight taken to hospital for further care.

Police deployment and investigations

Approximately 1,400 police officers were deployed to secure the derby between the two western German cities, which lie about 50 km apart. Investigations have been opened for insults, bodily harm, property damage, public order offences, violence against police and violations of explosives legislation.
