Chaos around Carrick at United: Look ahead to the next chapter

Manchester United sinks once again into chaos, while manager Michael Carrick is on the brink of being sacked – but the fans cheer him on, revealing the deep divide within the club. On the pitch at Old Trafford there were no whistles, no boos, but only chants celebrating the man who endured the worst start to a season in Premier League history.

The scene was symbolic: while United fans celebrated Carrick, the players were booed. No whistles, no boos, instead jubilation erupted. The crowd hailed their manager with chants, even though the team had lost its eighth consecutive league game after a 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth. The Athletic described the incident as a ‘mutiny’ by the fans.

The next managerial change seemed inevitable, but belief that a new coach could turn things around has dwindled to a minimum given the developments of recent years. The Guardian wrote that ‘another era is heading towards its end’ and that optimism was a waste of time. Since Sir Alex Ferguson left the role in 2013, seven head coaches have already failed – David Moyes, José Mourinho, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag – and Carrick would be the eighth.

Responsibility among the owners

Frustration is increasingly directed at the Glazer family, the British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and sporting director Jason Wilcox. Defender Lisandro Martinez emphasized in an interview: ‘You can’t just keep changing the manager, changing the manager, changing the manager.’ Carrick himself also saw the bigger picture and said: ‘The situation we find ourselves in as a football club is what matters most to me. It’s not about me.’

He does, however, accept his ‘share of the situation’ and says he is moved by the positive reaction of the fans. The former midfielder recalled: ‘The emotions at the end of the game were something I have never really experienced before. Feeling the connection and appreciation from the fans means a great deal to me.’ Carrick, who was appointed head coach five months ago after a successful interim spell, has made 464 league appearances for United in his professional career.

Unclear succession

Possible successors already mentioned include former national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte and Fabian Hürzeler. According to the Guardian, former Newcastle coach Eddie Howe is the preferred candidate of sporting chief Wilcox. The Guardian added that ‘change’ will come, ‘but that will not be enough.’

The scene of cheering fans and looming dismissal shows that the chaos at United runs deeper than a single managerial change. In this way it becomes clear that structural issues and criticism of the owners remain the real obstacle – a upheaval that means more than just an exit for Carrick.
