Championship defender Krystian Bielik gets two‑match ban, £10,000 fine
In the waning minutes of Cardiff City’s 2‑0 Championship loss to Portsmouth at Fratton Park on 5 September, defender Krystian Bielik was caught on video appearing to grip a young supporter around the throat. The FA has responded with a two‑match ban and a £10,000 fine.
FA sanctions
The Football Association confirmed that Bielik was suspended for two matches and fined £10,000 for misconduct during the fixture. The charge alleged improper conduct around the 71st minute, which Bielik subsequently admitted. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed the sanctions after a hearing, and written reasons will be published in due course.
Police investigation and apology
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary investigated the incident and concluded no further action was required after Bielik offered an apology to the supporter. The case was resolved by an out‑of‑court disposal, with the police spokesperson stating the matter was now closed. Sport journalist Felix Keith, a senior sports reporter, described the view captured in images as unsettling.
Bielik will miss Cardiff’s next two Championship fixtures: the away trip to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday and the home game against Watford on Tuesday 13 October.
The 28‑year‑old Poland international has made seven appearances for the Bluebirds this season after joining from West Bromwich Albion in the summer.
Cardiff City have endured a poor start to the campaign, sitting 21st in the Championship having won just one of eight games so far.
Head coach Brian Barry‑Murphy said he wanted to ensure Bielik was protected and praised the referee’s handling of the incident. “The players are always subjected to different things that’s not acceptable,” he added, noting that the correct processes would be followed.
Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho apologised to Cardiff’s players after the match and expressed that he was “absolutely furious” about the situation. A fan was ejected after throwing a ball at Perry Ng, and another supporter was removed after allegedly slapping Bielik in the face.
The episode highlights the FA’s readiness to discipline player misconduct involving supporters, reinforcing standards of conduct in the English game.
