In a bizarre incident that has dominated headlines, a smoke bomb landed metres from the ball during the women’s Champions League clash between Bayern München and Manchester City, yet the goal was allowed to stand.

During the first half, Manchester City’s left‑back Kerstin Casparij pushed forward on the right flank when a burning smoke bomb exploded just a few metres from her feet. Spanish referee Olatz Rivera Olmedo chose not to stop play, and the match continued. Beth Mead later found the net, and in the second half Carlotta Wamser levelled the score at 2‑2.

Reports suggest the devices were thrown from outside the stadium, with witnesses claiming they were launched over the tribune from an electric scooter. German newspaper links the act to ultras of amateur side SpVgg Unterhaching, noting the bombs bore the club’s red‑blue colours. SpVgg Unterhaching’s chairman Manfred Schwabl, who oversaw the sale of the club’s stadium to Bayern München for €7.5 million in December 2025, said the supporters had been consulted before the purchase but implied the incident was not sanctioned.

Investigations are ongoing, and while Bayern München bears responsibility for safety within the stadium, the club is not liable for incidents occurring in public areas beyond its control.
