Champions League Arnautović: 2010 Triumph and Police Link

Marko Arnautović, the 37‑year‑old record international player and top scorer of Austria, recalls the triumph of Inter Milan in the 2010 Champions League final and the two police incidents that occurred immediately afterwards.

The Triumph in Madrid

In the final in Madrid, Inter Milan defeated FC Bayern 2‑0 and claimed the coveted trophy. Arnautović, who at that time was under contract with the Italians, celebrated the victory together with his teammates.

First Police Incident

After the match, Arnautović was wrestled to the ground by the police because the officers thought he was a fan. Without accreditation, which he had allegedly thrown away, he was detained and had to lie on the field while police officers shouted “Stop” loudly.

Co‑coach resolves the situation

Inter co‑coach intervened, explained to the police officers that Arnautović was a player, and instructed them to keep him on the field and let him go to the dressing room. Shortly thereafter he returned to the pitch.

Second Police Incident and the Bayern Bus

A short while later Arnautović boarded the Bayern bus, where teammate Mario Balotelli was already on the phone. While trying to break the window pane, he startled Balotelli, prompting six police officers to appear again and arrest him once more.

Escape from the bus and meeting with van Gaal

Arnautović then left the Bayern bus, got into the Inter bus and met coach Louis van Gaal there, shaking his hand and congratulating him on the game. Despite all the turbulence, he remained a “No‑Name” for many, as he jokingly noted himself.
