Celtic's Martin O'Neill hospitalised after minor procedure

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, 74, was admitted to hospital after a "small procedure" and the club said he should leave within the "next day or two". He had been in the dugout as Celtic opened their Scottish Premiership title defence at home to Dundee on Monday, a match that ended 1-0.

Celtic announced on Wednesday afternoon: "In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O'Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital," the Scottish champions posted ON social media, accompanied by an ImageMartin of the manager.

There are no details about the Northern Irishman's procedure, and the club provided no further medical information. The statement referred to him simply as the Irishman.

Senior Sports Reporter Nathan Ridley, writing at Reporter17:29 on 05 Aug, relayed the update and highlighted the club's confidence in O'Neill's swift recovery. Ridley noted the club's message was clear and concise.

After two interim spells last season, the former Aston Villa boss signed a one‑year contract with an option for a further 12 months in June, becoming Celtic's permanent manager. He had not managed since 2019.

O'Neill was present in the dugout during the 1‑0 win over Dundee, marking the start of Celtic's Scottish Premiership campaign. The match, captured in an Image: Ian MacNicol/Getty Images, underscored his immediate return to duties.
