Castellini defends Maradona, calls Napoli’s spirit one‑of‑a‑kind
Former SSC Napoli goalkeeper Luciano Castellini told Stile TV that Diego Armando Maradona should never be judged but blessed, calling the Argentine a truly irreplaceable icon of the club. In the same breath he praised the unique bond he feels with SSC Napoli, the city and its supporters.
In an interview, Castellini opened up about his personal connection to Naples and the philosophy that sets the club apart from the rest of Italy.
During the conversation with host Raffaele Auriemma, Castellini recalled vivid moments from his own years wearing the blue shirt and stressed that the Napoli experience differs from any other Italian city’s football culture.
He summed it up with a memorable line: “The experience of SSC Napoli is unique. Whoever does not live at SSC Napoli cannot understand it; it is strange to say, but it is the reality.”
Castellini contrasted life in Bolzano or Turin with that of SSC Napoli, adding that after a couple of seasons a player “enters the city, its moods, everything,” highlighting the deep integration required in Naples.
He also noted that the fundamental duty of a goalkeeper – stopping shots – has not changed, even as modern football evolves.
Speaking about the fans, he observed: “First you learn to stop shots and then to play with your feet. The philosophy of SSC Napoli is that if you give everything they forgive everything, it is very simple. When I made mistakes I recognized them and the people appreciated me.”
A special tribute was reserved for Diego Armando Maradona. Castellini defended the legend, saying, “Sometimes I get angry when someone judges Maradona; they must not judge him, they must bless him. He will never die, Diego. He is unique and alone.”
The interview was highlighted in Google Discover’s “Preferred Sources” list, marked as Press A− A+, underscoring the continued public interest in Castellini’s reflections on SSC Napoli and Maradona.
