Carrick’s ‘stardust’ doubts dim Man United’s Premier League push

Jamie Carragher has warned that Michael Carrick lacks the ‘stardust’ needed to deliver a Premier League or Champions League title for Manchester United, a view he voiced as a pundit while naming the Spurs signing the Red Devils should have secured. The former Liverpool legend’s comment comes as the club prepares for the 2026‑27 campaign.

Carrick’s appointment and early impact

Carrick, 45, secured the permanent Man United role this summer after impressing during his interim spell that began following the sacking of Ruben Amorim in January. The appointment gave Carrick the Old Trafford dugout on a permanent basis.

During his interim tenure the Red Devils recorded wins over Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, ultimately finishing third and restoring the club’s Champions League place after two seasons without it. The third‑place finish also ended a period of league underperformance.

Fans responded with a groundswell of optimism, believing Carrick could guide United to their first league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 departure. Supporters cited the early results as evidence that the club could return to the summit of English football.

Despite the optimism, Carragher urged caution ahead of the 2026‑27 Premier League season, stating he does not think Carrick possesses the managerial ‘stardust’ required for a league or Champions League triumph. He emphasized the need for United to become a solid Champions League club before targeting major trophies.

Transfer moves and squad concerns

In the summer transfer window Carrick added midfielders Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa to strengthen the squad. Both arrivals were intended to bolster United’s creative options in the centre of the park.

Carragher also criticised United for walking away from a £85 million bid for former West Ham star Mateus Fernandes, a player who subsequently joined Spurs. He questioned whether the price was truly prohibitive for a top‑level midfielder.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes warned that the defence remains a problem, highlighting a lack of reliable centre halves. He pointed to injuries affecting Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and the two‑year struggle of Leny Yoro, while noting Matthijs de Ligt has been sidelined with a long‑term back injury since November.

The combination of Carrick’s promising start and the identified defensive gaps means United are set for Champions League qualification but must resolve their back‑line issues to challenge for the Premier League title next season. How the club addresses those concerns will shape its trajectory in the upcoming campaign.
