Carrick faces decisive weeks as Romano backs Conte at Man Utd

Michael Carrick, who signed a two‑year contract in May after impressing the Old Trafford hierarchy as interim head coach, now faces a make‑or‑break period at Man Utd, with journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming that Antonio Conte is being linked as his potential successor.

During his interim spell last season, Carrick restored a feel‑good atmosphere at Man Utd, steering the side into the Champions League places and securing victories over several of the league’s traditional ‘Big Six’ clubs.

Recent slump and pressure

Form deteriorated before the international break, as United managed only one win in five matches. A 10‑man Manchester City defeated them at home, Brighton knocked them out of the League Cup, and Fulham held them to a 1‑1 draw after a poor display.

The poor run has intensified scrutiny on Carrick, with names such as Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann, Fabian Hurzeler and Eddie Howe circulating as possible replacements.

Romano’s assessment

In his Affidabile column, Romano wrote that Carrick is entering ‘decisive weeks’ to prove his worth to the club’s hierarchy. He added, ‘Manchester United is sending signals of confidence when it comes to Michael Carrick… the players are 100 % behind the manager, there’s no fracture or break.’

Romano also warned that ‘three defeats, two draws, and just two wins (at home to Ipswich and Sabah) in the last seven games are too few to remain safe.’ He noted the club’s faith in Carrick persists, hoping the upcoming home match against Tottenham will spark a turnaround.

Conte’s vision

Conte, speaking to The Athletic, criticised English clubs for using ‘bazookas’ while others still rely on ‘pistols’, and stressed the need for prudent spending. He explained his ambition to restore a club’s lost history, saying he wants to ‘dust off that history and make it shine once more’ and compete for trophies rather than merely take part.

Meanwhile, United have been offered the chance to re‑sign Scott McTominay for a bargain fee, adding another piece to the club’s summer agenda.
