Carrick calls Manchester United dismissal rumours ridiculous
Michael Carrick, the 45‑year-old manager of Manchester United, says that rumours about a possible dismissal are ridiculous. He emphasises that the club has only won two of the first six matches in all competitions, while the pressure at Old Trafford is increasing.
Results and pressure
The Red Devils lost last weekend the Manchester‑derby to Manchester City and suffered a 3‑2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday in the third round of the League Cup, after having taken a 2‑0 lead first. In the Premier League they have so far collected four points from four games. This run of two consecutive defeats is the first since Carrick's appointment.
Carrick's reaction
At the press conference before the match against Fulham, Carrick said: “It is ridiculous to think like that in the position I am in. That is not on my radar at all.” He continued: “It is not a catastrophe or disaster. It is not the end of the world.” The former midfielder added that the team has shown enough good phases to retain confidence in a turnaround.
Support from the board
Mark Goldbridge, a well‑known United fan and YouTuber, reported on X at 9:03 am on 18 September that football director Jason Wilcox is fully behind Carrick, while another board member wants to see him leave. Goldbridge noted that Wilcox, who has been at United since April 2024, previously let Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim go. According to Teamtalk the co‑owners INEOS have no plans to remove Carrick.
A United insider explained that the club believes it has a very good young head coach and that there will be no “knee‑jerk‑reactions”. He mentioned two wonder‑goals against Everton that could have meant a win and pointed to a controversial goal in the match against Manchester City that was later confirmed by the Premier League as an error.
Goldbridge, who has 1.1 million followers on X and 2.3 million subscribers on YouTube, emphasised that it is “astonishing” that Wilcox still has influence, given the “catastrophic” results since his appointment.
Despite the criticism, Carrick tries to reassure the fans: “It is about how you deal with it, how you respond, how you stay focused and keep doing the right things.” He believes that the club, despite the recent setbacks, is still capable of improving the results.
The contrast between Carrick’s calm message and the divided signals from the board shows that the future of Manchester United remains uncertain, but that within the club there is both support and doubt about the continuation of his leadership.
