Carragher urges Iraola to confront Liverpool’s £60m Szoboszlai
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has urged manager Andoni Iraola to sit down with Hungarian vice‑captain Dominik Szoboszlai and reconsider his position, arguing that the £60m signing would be better utilised at right‑back after a mixed deployment in last season.
Szoboszlai’s mixed deployment last season
Szoboszlai is a midfielder by trade, yet he featured at right‑back on ten occasions and as a right‑winger on ten matches last campaign. In 53 appearances across all competitions he contributed 13 goals and 12 assists.
Iraola has predominantly deployed him in central midfield this season, despite his versatility. The Hungarian’s adaptability has been a key asset as Liverpool navigate injuries.
Carragher’s case for a right‑back shift
“I have never believed Szoboszlai is a central midfield player,” Carragher said. He compared the Hungarian’s style to Jordan Henderson, noting the extra goal threat.
Carragher added that Szoboszlai’s new £350,000‑a‑week contract makes a permanent move to right‑back unlikely, but the conversation is necessary. He warned that keeping him in midfield may not suit Liverpool’s system.
Iraola’s response and squad context
“I haven’t found any situation where a player has said he doesn’t want to play in a position,” he told reporters. He affirmed he will use Dom at right‑back if the squad demands it.
With Conor Bradley injured and Jeremie Frimpong struggling for form, Liverpool’s right‑back options are limited after Trent Alexander‑Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid. Szoboszlai arrived for £60million, Victor Munoz for £34.5million and Kerkez for £40million, while Bradley Barcola’s fee has been reported at £123million and also at £60million.
Gary Neville expressed disbelief at Liverpool’s transfer window, saying the lack of full‑back signings could prove costly. He suggested the club may regret the oversight as the season progresses.
