Carragher urges City to lose titles over financial breach
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has argued that any punishment for Manchester City should go beyond a monetary fine, insisting that the club’s recent sanctions merit the removal of its trophies. In a column published in the British press, Carragher sharply criticised the Citizens’ leadership after the decision was announced.
Calls for title revocation
He contends that the communication from Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano fails to match the seriousness of the case and describes it as a form of denial. Carragher believes that stripping the titles won during the period in question would send a strong signal and preserve the credibility of the regulations.
The former England international adds that an exemplary sanction is essential to show that rules apply to every club, regardless of financial or sporting power. He quoted, "City is in denial, refusing to acknowledge that its reputation is broken after being found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges… Ferran Soriano sounded more like Donald Trump, invoking conspiracies and alternative facts."
Beyond institutional penalties, Carragher warns the issue could ripple through the Manchester dressing room. He does not rule out the possibility that some players may question their futures and consider leaving to escape the heightened media and legal pressure.
His comments underline a broader concern that the Citizens’ handling of the matter could set a precedent for future governance in football.
