Cardiff’s £500,000 gamble on Etete sparks hope after Spurs exit

Cardiff’s £500,000 gamble on Etete sparks hope after Spurs exit

Tottenham Hotspur have sold 21‑year‑old striker Kion Etete to Cardiff City for a fee of £500,000, ending a three‑year spell that saw the forward struggle for first‑team minutes and spend most of his time on loan. The move comes after Etete failed to break into Spurs’ senior side and featured primarily in their youth teams, and it follows his early senior debut for Notts County.

Cardiff’s gamble on a tall striker

Cardiff City, a club that had relied heavily on free transfers and loan deals, chose to invest a significant sum in Etete, signalling a desire to secure a long‑term attacking option. The 21‑year‑old arrived with a record of eight goals in 13 U18 Premier League games and nine in 21 PL2 outings for Spurs’ under‑21 side, suggesting a proven scoring pedigree at youth level. Cardiff hope the towering forward can translate that promise into regular Championship contributions.

Etete’s journey from Notts to the Championship

Etete became the fourth‑youngest player ever to appear for Notts County when he debuted in October 2018, a season that ended with the club’s relegation from the Football League. After the club’s sale to the Reedtz brothers, he featured in five further matches across League Two and the FA Cup before a trial at Tottenham Hotspur began.

During his trial, the then‑17‑year‑old scored twice in a 5‑3 U18 Premier League win over West Ham United, prompting Tottenham to sign him permanently after Notts County’s drop to the National League. The north London side had just reached the UEFA Champions League final and were renowned for developing young forwards.

Etete’s youth record at Spurs was impressive – eight goals in 13 U18 Premier League games in 2019/20 and nine in 21 PL2 fixtures the following season – but he never featured for the first team. Instead, he spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan, first with Northampton Town in League Two and then with Cheltenham Town in League One, scoring three goals for each club and helping Cheltenham retain their third‑tier status.

Since joining Cardiff, Etete has made 56 Championship appearances, scoring six times, but injuries have limited his ability to become a regular starter. He has not featured in a league match for the Bluebirds for over two years, spending recent seasons on uneventful loans with minimal playing time.
