Camp Nou renovation delayed by at least a year – return only in 2028

The Camp Nou renovation is once again stalling, meaning FC Barcelona will not be able to play in the new stadium until January 2028. The delay is at least one year, as the Turkish company Limak has admitted. This pushes the originally planned completion date significantly further back.

Delay and new return dates

The construction work, which had already stalled a few years ago, was most recently confirmed by Limak. According to El Confidencial, the delay is at least one year. Previously, completion in 2027 was being discussed; now the FC Barcelona management is counting on the 2028/29 season.

Vice President Ferran Olive stated at the general assembly that roughly half of the 2027/28 season could not be played at Camp Nou. He cited January 2028 as the new date for the return to the stadium, which after the renovation will hold 105 000 seats.

Since 2023, Barca has already had to resort to the Olympic Stadium until the construction work on the new Camp Nou is completed. This temporary solution is now expected to last until 2028.

The Spanish daily The Athletic reported that FC Barcelona's debt pile could rise to as much as €2.6 billion, further highlighting the financial burden of the project.

The current situation has only minor impact on sporting performance. Under coach Hansi Flick, the team has recorded eight wins from eight games and delivered a sensational start to the season.
