Cambridge United shore up defence with Coventry loanee Callum Perry
Cambridge United have bolstered their back line by securing 20‑year‑old defender Callum Perry on a season‑long loan from Coventry City, addressing the need for defensive depth as the newly‑promoted League One side adapts to a higher division for the upcoming campaign. The loan aims to give Perry regular first‑team football and to aid Cambridge’s campaign.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at National League side Rochdale, where he helped the club earn promotion back to the EFL. During his spell at Rochdale he made 25 appearances and scored the decisive penalty in the play‑off final at Wembley, sealing a place in League Two.
Those performances demonstrated his ability to perform under high pressure. The move follows Perry signing a new long‑term contract with Premier League side Coventry City last month, confirming the club’s belief in his potential.
"I'm buzzing," Perry said, adding that he wants to get better and help the team and he thinks Cambridge is the perfect place to do that. "We look forward to helping Callum develop and progress as a young player on his journey to the top," Cambridge boss Neil Harris added, noting that the loan offers Cambridge defensive depth and gives Perry a platform in League One.
The signing was confirmed in a Cambridge United] announcement. The arrangement provides Coventry City with a pathway to develop Perry while strengthening Cambridge United’s defensive options in League One.
