Calm composure meets club chaos: Pirlo's test for Italy
Inside the quiet corridors of the FIGC headquarters, Andrea Pirlo Italy stands on the brink of a historic appointment, with the federation poised to hand the reins of the men’s national side to the calm‑spoken former midfielder, heralding a new era for the Azzurri.
Pirlo’s coaching career spans just over half a decade, during which he has produced a patchwork of outcomes at several clubs. The calm‑spoken Italian’s record is marked by both modest successes and notable setbacks, underscoring a mixed legacy.
His first senior role arrived at Juventus, the Bianconeri also known as Juve, where he took charge amid contentious circumstances. Despite the turbulence, his spell at the Old Lady remains the most prominent achievement of his managerial résumé.
After a season away, Pirlo moved to Turkey to manage Fatih Karagümrük, guiding the side to a mid‑table finish in his sole campaign. The club was relegated immediately after his departure, slipping back to the Turkish second tier.

Returning to Italy, he was appointed Sampdoria head coach ahead of the 2023/24 season, steering the team into the Serie B play‑offs in his inaugural year. A poor start to the following campaign led to his early dismissal, and the club later flirted with relegation to Serie C.
In 2025 Pirlo accepted a surprising role with Dubai United in the UAE’s second division, delivering promotion to the UAE Pro League in his first season and adding a rare triumph to his résumé.

Pirlo advocates adaptive formations and a possession‑first approach, while acknowledging the modern game’s increasing physicality and the need for pace‑driven players.
Azzurri supporters remain wary, noting that his club record offers limited reassurance for Italy’s upcoming challenges; the juxtaposition of his serene demeanor against a patchwork of club outcomes highlights the uncertainty surrounding his national team debut.
