Cagliari update: 20‑year‑old Fransman awakens from induced coma

Cagliari announced a positive update on 20‑year‑old Fransman Yael Trepy, who after nearly drowning in a pool last weekend and being placed in an artificial coma, has now awakened, the club said via its official channels. The news arrives as the team recovers from a recent Coppa Italia fixture.

The incident occurred over the weekend when the young Frenchman slipped near a pool and almost drowned, prompting medical staff to induce an artificial coma as a precaution. He was subsequently transferred to intensive care where doctors maintained the coma.

The statement confirmed that Trepy is fully conscious and cooperative.

On‑field involvement before the incident

All squad members, including Trepy, were granted two days off after Cagliari’s Coppa Italia match on Friday 14 August. In the subsequent Serie A game against Arezzo, which ended 1‑0, Trepy started in the lineup but was withdrawn after 54 minutes.

Medical update and ongoing care

Despite waking from the induced coma, Trepy remains in intensive care for close monitoring. The club added, ‘Zijn toestand en ademhaling worden daar nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden,’ and promised further clinical information as the situation evolves.

It is still uncertain whether the episode has caused any lasting neurological damage. To date, Trepy has featured in nine first‑team matches for the Serie A side, scoring one goal.

The juxtaposition of a brief on‑field appearance and a serious health scare underscores how quickly a player’s circumstances can shift, while Cagliari’s transparent updates aim to keep supporters informed of Trepy’s progress.
