Bury mourn former England youth captain Courtney Meppen-Walter, aged 32
Former Manchester City youth star Courtney Meppen-Walter died on 29 September 2026, aged 32, as announced by his former club Bury. The club posted a statement on social media expressing deep sadness. The announcement came in September, confirming the tragic loss.
Bury’s statement read: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Courtney Meppen-Walter, at the age of 32. The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Bury FC are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.” Our football community joins Bury in mourning.
Youth promise and England captaincy
Meppen-Walter rose through Manchester City’s academy and captained England’s under‑18 side. His early potential marked him as a promising defensive midfielder who could also operate in defence. The former England youth captain was released by Man City in 2013 after a prison term.
Following his release, he signed for Carlisle United, where he spent two seasons between 2013 and 2015. Subsequent non‑league spells included Ashton United, Stockport County, Glossop North End, Chorley, AFC Telford United, Radcliffe, Guiseley, Nantwich Town, Bury and Stalybridge Celtic.
Legal convictions and driving bans
In 2013 Meppen-Walter was jailed for 16 months for careless driving that caused the deaths of two people. He served half of that sentence before returning to football. A 12‑month community order, 80 hours of unpaid work and a £170 cost bill were also imposed.
He received a 22‑month driving ban in 2019 after being caught drink‑driving, with breath‑alcohol readings of 85 micrograms per 100 ml, more than twice the legal limit of 35. The court noted his poor judgment and genuine remorse.
Clubs remember the former player
Guiseley AFC posted a tribute, noting Meppen-Walter made 28 appearances between 2022 and 2024 and won the 2022/23 Manager’s Player of the Season award. Carlisle United also expressed deep sadness, echoing Bury’s condolences.
Meppen-Walter was released by Bury in the summer of 2025 after a loan spell at Stalybridge Celtic. The former Manchester City youth product’s career spanned both league and non‑league football, leaving a mixed legacy of talent and controversy.
His death underscores the lasting impact of off‑field actions on a player’s reputation, reminding the football community of the importance of personal responsibility alongside sporting achievement.
