Burnley target free Rabbi Matondo despite transfer window closing

A Championship club, Burnley, is interested in the free agent Rabbi Matondo, 25, after last Thursday's transfer window closed, while the player has been without a contract since his departure from SK Brann. The Norwegian club did not extend his contract, leaving him free of any obligations.

Contractual freedom after the transfer window closure

Even though the transfer window closed last Thursday, clubs retain the right to sign players who are free of any contract.

He was under contract with SK Brann, a Norwegian club, but was not extended after a knee injury that only allowed him to play three matches in the Eliteserien.

Previously, Rabbi Matondo made his mark in the Jupiler Pro League with Club Brugge, where he scored ten goals in twenty‑seven matches, demonstrating his dribbling talent.

Loaned from Schalke 04, he then signed for Glasgow Rangers for three million euros, tallying seventy matches, eight goals and eleven assists under the Scottish colours.

Belgian interest and transfer prospects

Burnley, playing in the Championship, would be the main English suitor; Nicky Hayen, former manager of Club Brugge and now in charge of the Clarets, recalls his qualities.

But two Belgian clubs, Zulte Waregem and his former employer Club Brugge, are also monitoring the situation, hoping to bring back the Welsh international with fifteen caps.

It remains to be seen what form Rabbi Matondo will be in after his injury, but a signing could represent a very good deal for the club that acquires him.
