Burnley boost Championship goalkeeping depth with Jackie Burns
Burnley have moved to reinforce their Championship goalkeeping depth by signing former Bristol City keeper Jackie Burns on a free transfer. The 29‑year‑old joins the Turf Moor squad on a two‑year contract with an option for a third, a deal announced this evening.
The signing follows Burns’ departure from Bristol City earlier this summer and expands Burnley’s options between the posts in the Championship. Her arrival provides additional competition and cover for the starting role.
Burnley’s official website posted the announcement this evening, with the statement issued by the Clarettes. The club confirmed the free‑transfer nature of the agreement.
Burns, 29, previously enjoyed two spells with Bristol City, featuring in the 2024/2025 season and returning on a short‑term deal in the second half of the last campaign. Her experience at Ashton Gate adds valuable league familiarity.
During her time at Ashton Gate she provided strong competition for the starting spot, contributing to the squad’s depth in goal. The performances helped the team maintain a solid defensive record.
Internationally, Burns has earned 69 caps for Northern Ireland and remains a regular fixture in the national side’s lineup. Her international experience is expected to benefit Burnley’s defensive organization.
Burns said, “It feels really good to be here. It’s nice to finally get it over the line and be here with the girls, and I’m really looking forward to the new season. I had a chat with the staff and the manager, and everything that they said aligns with what I want to do moving forwards. The more we talked, it felt like the right time to come to Burnley and push on with them in the Championship.”
The signing coincides with fellow goalkeeper Naoisha McAloon extending her contract by another 12 months, also with an option for an additional year. The dual commitments strengthen Burnley’s goalkeeping options for the upcoming Championship campaign.
