Bundesliga star Kennet Eichhorn out indefinitely after July illness

Bayer Leverkusen’s 17‑year‑old midfielder Kennet Eichhorn, signed in June for nine million euros, has been hospitalized with a metabolic disorder and will be out indefinitely, the club confirmed after his condition deteriorated in July following a gastrointestinal infection that saw him lose five kilos in five days.

Leverkusen confirmed that Eichhorn will receive treatment at a specialised clinic and will stay away from the first‑team squad until he is medically cleared. The club emphasised that his health takes precedence over any immediate football plans.

The 17‑year‑old had been earmarked as the creative hub in the system of new coach Carles Martínez. Martínez’s tactical setup was expected to revolve around Eichhorn’s midfield vision and passing range.

The board and coaching staff have pledged full support to Eichhorn’s family throughout his recovery. They expressed hope that the promising midfielder will return swiftly to action.

Dubbed the ‘jewel of German football’, Eichhorn’s rise has been closely watched across the Bundesliga. His nine‑million‑euro transfer in June underscored the high expectations placed on the teenager.

His indefinite absence represents a significant setback to Bayer Leverkusen’s investment in young talent. The club now faces the challenge of filling the creative void left by his sidelining.
