Buijs celebrates Guth’s comeback as Fortuna fight AZ defeat

Geert-Jan Jakob VIRodrigo Guth made his Fortuna Sittard return on Saturday evening, featuring for the Dutch Eredivisie side in a loss to AZ, and was immediately lauded by trainer Danny Buijs. The 25‑year‑old Brazil‑German hopes to rediscover his best after a disappointing spell in Argentina.

The defeat to AZ saw Fortuna Sittard reduced to ten men early in the second half when Ole Romeny was sent off, and Guth was on the field for a quarter of an hour.

‘Blij om terug te zijn’, Guth said after the match, adding that he enjoyed the crowd’s reception, felt a special bond with the club and its supporters, and wants to reach his previous level after three pleasant years with Fortuna.

Background and transfer

Guth, a Braziliaanse Duitser, spent a disappointing period in Argentinië with CA Talleres, where he was not an undisputed starter and the club had paid more than one million euros for him the previous year.

Fortuna brought the 25‑year‑old back this summer from the Argentine side, confirming his return to the Eredivisie after the summer move.

Coach Buijs’s assessment

De coach Buijs was pleased with the comeback, noting that in twenty minutes Rodrigo already showed the kind of ‘kerel’ who defends well inside the lines, though he is not yet top‑fit and Buijs had initially doubted his selection.

Buijs added that Rodrigo possesses defensive qualities, is a top‑class professional, and brings leadership, coaching initiative, duel strength and heading power; having worked well with him before, Buijs said the decision to sign him was straightforward when he became available.
