Bronze win and bright prospects mask Austria's swim gaps

The Schwimm-EM Medaillenserie held steady with a bronze for Luka Mladenovic, yet the Junge cohort also exposed a Luft of improvement needed, according to sport director Jakub Maly. While the medal tally confirms progress, the young swimmers' performances highlighted gaps in start times and self‑management that the federation must close.

Young medalists brighten Austria's swim team

Luka Mladenovic secured Bronze in the 200 m Brust, posting a strong Leistung at 22 Jahren and positioning himself as one of the older members of the new Garde. His result adds a Langbahn-EM-Medaille to Austria’s tally and underscores the impact of the Jungen on the Schwimm-Team.

Christian Giefing, the 18‑year‑alte Kraul‑Vierte, also emerged as a Lichtblick, finishing fourth and joining Mladenovic as a primary candidate for the 2028 Olympia‑Limits. Both athletes belong to the Youngsters who have stolen the Show from the Älteren in the Team.

The duo have repeatedly beaten the required Vorlaufzeiten for Los Angeles qualification, though the official counting starts on 1 März 2027. Their times demonstrate that the current Vorlauf and overall Zeit standards are within reach for Austria’s emerging talent.

Director Maly demands better start times and self‑management

Sportdirektor Maly said, "Die EM ist so verlaufen, wie ich es mir erwartet habe," but added that with 20 Aktive he had hoped for more personal Bestzeit improvements. He stressed that Besserung in Vorlaufzeiten and Selbstmanagement is essential for future competitiveness.

Maly outlined that the next season, beginning after a three‑week pause, must deliver a Leistungssprung before the July World Championships in Budapest. He warned that without better morning (Vormittag) performances, afternoon finals will suffer, echoing concerns for both EM and future WM.

Management of athletes during dense competition weeks also requires attention. Maly highlighted that swimmers with five to seven events must handle Mixed‑Zone logistics, bedtime routines, and parental distractions themselves, noting observed performance drops toward the end of sessions.

To address these issues, Maly has expanded Teamtrainingslager projects, meeting the A‑Kader several times a year for relay composition, handover drills, training and technique analysis, and Kraft‑Entwicklungsanalyse. He emphasized preserving the regional training hubs in Südstadt, Linz and Salzburg as vital to recent successes.

Other headlines in the coverage included a 19‑year‑alter Deutscher setting a world record at the Schwimm‑EM and a feature titled "Ich habe Angst vor dem Aufhören". The tags DE and ROSA also appeared among the metadata, reflecting the broader context of the event.
