Broken trust forces Okafor to stop as Swiss international

Noah Okafor, a 26‑year‑old striker of Leeds United, has announced that he will no longer play for Switzerland as long as Murat Yakin remains head coach. In a personal statement he explains the decision as a matter of broken trust, not of playing time, and points to the 26 caps he has already earned.

Limited playing time and broken trust

Okafor, 26, a striker for Leeds United, has 26 caps for the Swiss to his name. At the last World Cup he received only nineteen minutes against Algeria in the round of sixteen, a fact he does not cite as a reason for his decision. Another source notes that he also did not play more than nineteen minutes during the 2026 World Cup.

In a lengthy statement he emphasizes that it is not about playing time, but about a loss of trust he has experienced. He says that promises have not been fulfilled and that certain events have hurt him, leading him to decide not to play under the current manager any longer.

Response from the Swiss federation

The Swiss football association confirms that Okafor has withdrawn from international duty for an indefinite period. They respect his decision and wish him success at his club, explicitly stating that he has personally indicated that he will no longer come for the national team.

Okafor nevertheless praised Yakin’s performances, who, according to him, achieved historic success with the World Cup quarter‑final. He acknowledges Yakin’s good work, but sees no foundation for the coming years under his leadership.

The club Leeds United, where he now plays, is only the latest chapter; he previously played for AC Milan, Salzburg, Milan and Napoli and moved to the Premier League in 2025. He is seen as one of the symbols of the renewal of the Nati after the Shaqiri generation, while tensions with Murat Yakin escalated during the U.S. World Cup.

Okafor concludes with a wish for the team: he will continue to support his former teammates and hopes that the Swiss squad receives all the best for the future.
