Bristol City’s four‑year gamble on Swiss striker Lorent Tolaj from Plymouth
Bristol City have signed Swiss striker Lorent Tolaj from Plymouth Argyle on a four‑year contract for an undisclosed fee, after the 24‑year‑old scored in four of his last six games, including the 3‑2 victory over Northampton Town on the season’s final day.
Tolaj netted 38 goals in all competitions across the past two seasons, confirming his reputation as a prolific centre‑forward in the English game.
After arriving from non‑league Aldershot Town in 2024, Tolaj quickly found form at Port Vale, the Valiants, scoring 14 goals in 37 league appearances as they secured promotion to League One before moving to Home Park last August.
At Plymouth Argyle he forged a striking partnership with Bim Pepple, contributing 17 league goals last term; a muscle tear in late February sidelined him, but he returned to full fitness by Easter and added four goals and four assists in Argyle’s final six matches, as the club missed the play‑off places by two points.
Tolaj becomes Bristol City’s seventh summer signing, joining players such as Sam Tickle, Jed Wallace, Sam Greenwood and Lisav Eissat; a sell‑on clause means Port Vale will receive a portion of the transfer fee from Argyle.
Tolaj told the club website: "It is a great club with a great fanbase and I spoke with the manager about the plan. I am ambitious and this club is ambitious, so that's why I wanted to come here. To make the step up is important for me and I will give everything for this football club." Robins boss Michael Skubala added: "We are really pleased to add Lorent's physicality and intensity to our front line. His progression over the past few seasons is testament to both his talent and work ethic. He will add a different dimension to our squad and we believe he will thrive working with the group."
Analysts note that Tolaj’s departure will be a blow to Plymouth Argyle, but the fee—thought to exceed £4 million—quadruples the £1.1 million the club paid less than a year ago, representing good business for Argyle while giving Bristol City a proven scorer for the upcoming season.
