Brighton stages comeback, United loses 2‑0 lead in the Cup
Manchester United lost on Wednesday in the third round of the Carabao Cup against Brighton & Hove Albion, after the Red Devils had led 2-0 in the first quarter hour. The match took place at Old Trafford, United's home stadium, and ended with a 2-3 result, which eliminated United early from the competition for the second consecutive time.
Early lead for United
Shea Lacey, the 19-year-old striker, opened the game in the eighth minute by sliding the ball into the near corner after a pass from Youri Tielemans. Just two minutes later, Mason Mount doubled the score when, after a Brighton turnover, he put the ball into the net. This put United ahead 2-0 after ten minutes, a lead they could not maintain for the rest of the game.
The early lead made the fans at Trafford cheer, while Michael Carrick's side aimed for a controlled game. Despite the early advantage, United remained vulnerable to counter‑attacks, a problem that became decisive later on.
Brighton's impressive comeback
Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit in first‑half injury time (45+1') to 2-1, before Pascal Groß equalised in the 65th minute to make it 2-2. Just four minutes later, Maxim De Cuyper put Brighton ahead with a goal in the 69th minute, sealing the comeback.
Brighton & Hove Albion thus demonstrated how quickly an early lead can slip away from United. The South‑coast side benefited from swift counter‑attacks and a disciplined defence that repeatedly repelled United's attacks.
Consequences for United's game management
United had not lost a double‑lead since the 1970s, a record that was broken by the match against Brighton. Michael Carrick, who rotated the team during the game, was left without answers afterwards, as criticism of United's game management grew louder.
Brighton have won seven of the last eleven encounters with the Red Devils, establishing a clear dominance. The winning run includes, among others, a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup quarter‑final and a 4-0 win in 2022.
For Shea Lacey, it was the second time he scored at Old Trafford, but the early goal was not enough to save the team. Despite the defeat, his potential remains high, and the next training session could be crucial for his further development.
