Brighton’s comeback heightens pressure on Michael Carrick

Manchester United’s 3‑2 loss to Brighton in the Carabao Cup has intensified scrutiny on boss Michael Carrick, as the defeat erased a two‑goal lead and left the club’s defence in disarray, prompting a chorus of boos at Old Trafford and raising doubts over his selection policy.

Man United surrendered the advantage in a shambolic collapse, with loud boos echoing around Old Trafford as the two‑goal lead evaporated. Staff still regard Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven as a partnership for the future, and the duo started together for the first time this season.

Early goals set the tone

Shea Lacey opened the scoring after eight minutes, netting his first goal for the club, and Mason Mount doubled United’s lead just two minutes later. Brighton responded before half‑time when Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back, keeping the visitors within touching distance.

Pascal Gross restored parity at the 65th minute, and four minutes later Brighton completed the comeback, exploiting a disorganised United defence to claim the winner.

Backlash and the road ahead

Former England coach Jamie Redknapp blasted the centre‑backs, calling their performance ‘inept’ and saying, “The inexperience of the two young centre‑backs showed.” He added that both Yoro and Heaven made poor decisions, comparing them unfavourably with Brighton defender Luka Vuskovic.

Redknapp also criticised Heaven’s positioning, noting he had to sprint twenty yards to a striker who was already on his heels, while Yoro “does really poorly” and failed to stop the ball, saying the display was not suited to a five‑a‑side competition.

Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire have been Carrick’s preferred centre‑back pairing since he took charge in January, and Redknapp suggested the Brighton defeat makes a change unlikely ahead of Wednesday night’s evidence, insisting the team must become more aggressive.

Karl Darlow’s debut in goal proved disastrous, with former United winger Ashley Young criticising his role in Brighton’s opening goal, saying the lack of communication left the defence exposed.
