Brighton’s €26m gamble on Union’s top scorer Promise David

Union Saint‑Gilloise have confirmed that 25‑year‑old Canadian striker Promise David will join Brighton & Hove Albion on a season‑long loan, with a mandatory purchase clause worth roughly €26 million plus possible bonuses. The move marks another high‑value exit for the Brussels club.

Brighton secure striker with record‑breaking option

Brighton, which finished eighth in England’s top flight last season, signed David to replace Danny Welbeck, who departed for Chelsea. The club will pay a loan fee and is obligated to trigger the €26 million option if the player meets agreed criteria.

Sporting director Mike Cave said, “Promise is someone we have been watching for a while. He is a pure striker with excellent physical qualities and a proven record as a goal scorer.” The comment came as the deal was announced.

Union faces another talent drain

Union had anticipated a transfer after David’s two strong seasons and his impressive showing for Canada at the World Cup. The club had no plans to add another forward, making the departure a significant loss.

Earlier this week, midfielder Anan Khalaili left Union for Crystal Palace, generating €24 million plus €4 million in bonuses. Goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen also moved to the Premier League, signing for newly promoted Ipswich Town.

During his two seasons, David helped Union capture the league title, the cup and the Supercup. He scored 19 goals in the title‑winning campaign and netted the decisive goal in the final. Across 82 appearances he recorded 41 goals and nine assists.

David embraced Union owner Muzio in an emotional hug last weekend, underscoring the personal side of the transfer.
