Brighton gamble on Canada striker Promise David with £22m loan

Brighton have signed Canada striker Promise David from Royale Union Saint‑Gilloise on a season‑long loan with an obligation to buy for a reported £22 million. The 25‑year‑old arrives after 82 appearances for the Belgian side, where he netted 41 goals and added nine assists since joining in 2024.

Proven goal‑scoring pedigree and development path

David's record in Belgium underscores his reputation as a prolific striker. He scored 24 goals as Royale Union Saint‑Gilloise captured their first league title in 90 years in the 2024‑25 season, and his overall tally for the club stands at 41 goals and nine assists from 82 matches.

The 25‑year‑old began his senior career in Canada before moving to Croatia and the United States. He later featured for two sides in the Maltese Premier League, then joined Estonian club Nomme Kalju, and ultimately signed for the Belgian side Royale Union Saint‑Gilloise in 2024.

International pedigree and club endorsement

David appeared as a substitute in four of Canada's five World Cup matches, scoring in the 2‑1 group‑stage loss to Switzerland.

Sporting director Mike Cave said, “Promise is someone we have been watching for some time, he is an out‑and‑out striker who possesses outstanding physical attributes and a track record of scoring goals. His experience at international level and in European competition will hopefully prove valuable this season. At 25, he’s entering his prime playing years and we’re excited to see him continue to develop in our environment.”

Brighton will integrate David ahead of their Europa Conference League play‑offs against Tromsø on Thursday, followed by the Premier League opener at Aston Villa on Sunday at 14:00. The loan includes an obligation to buy, meaning the Seagulls have committed £22 million should the deal become permanent. His pace and aerial ability are expected to complement the existing forward line, providing a pre‑match boost for the upcoming fixtures.
